MIC4680BM is a monolithic synchronous Boost/Inverting DC to DC converter, which is a high performance Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) developed by Micrel Corp. It is an ideal product for high-end and power-sensitive applications, such as handheld terminals and PDAs. MIC4680BM is featured with its low output voltage ripple, high efficiency, current limit and fast transient response. The fully functional device allows the input voltage to be extended from 2.5V to 6.5V, suitable for Li-ion/Li-polymer battery pack and USB supply, while output voltage ranges from 3.3V to 6V. Its outstanding features make it the best choice for a wide range of applications, including DC to DC buck, boost and inverter converters, mobile phones, tablet PCs, and IoT applications.The MIC4680BM has two main parts - the Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) Control Block and the Switching Block (Figure 1). The PWM Control Block contains a dedicated Pulse Modulator and an incremental Pulse Repetition Frequency (PRF) battery charger/tracker control circuit. This circuit maintains a steady output voltage by controlling the PWM periods according to the input and output loading conditions. In addition, the device’s internal boost sensing circuit and a power supply active emulator ensure a high efficiency. The Switching Block keeps the output voltage steady through its constant-on-time (COT) topology and current limiting scheme. The COT topology provides a fast transient response and controlled operating current. The device’s current limit can be adjusted from 0A to 8A with an external resistor.The MIC4680BM provides excellent system protection with an over-temperature protection and an over-current protection. The over-temperature protection will automatically shut down when the device’s temperature exceeds the specified level, thus protecting other components.
