The MIC5236BM-TR is a low dropout (LDO) linear regulator from the MIC52xx series of fixed output voltages from Micrel. It is designed to operate from a wide input voltage range from 2.25 V to 12 V and deliver up to 360 mA output of current. Working Principle

The MIC5236BM-TR is an LDO linear voltage regulator. The voltage regulator is designed for use in applications where the input voltage range is typically 3.2 – 12 V and the output voltage range is 1.8 to 3.3 V. The MIC5236BM-TR is able to provide 0.35 A of continuous output current with a dropout voltage of 150 mV. The device also provides fast transient response and low noise performance.

The MIC5236BM-TR is a low noise, low drop-out (LDO) linear voltage regulator. It uses a built-in error amplifier to monitor the output voltage and maintains a stable output voltage. The output voltage is determined by the external resistor divider connected to the output voltage pins. The built-in error amplifier regularly compares the output voltage to a precision reference voltage output of 1.25 V. Any changes in the output voltage are detected by the error amplifier and its output is used to control the gate of an internal N-channel MOSFET switch whose drain is connected to the output and source is connected to GND.

When the input voltage is higher than the output voltage (Vin - Vout ≥ 150 mV), the internal MOSFET switch is closed, the output voltage is regulated and current is allowed to flow through the device. If the input voltage is lower than the output voltage, the internal MOSFET switch is open, the output voltage is drooped and the current is blocked from the output pins. The switching frequency of the internal MOSFET switch is controlled by the frequency compensation network, allowing the MIC5236BM-TR to provide fast transient response and low noise performance.

The MIC5236BM-TR also provides an intelligent control capability with the built-in undervoltage lockout (UVLO) circuit. This UVLO circuit will detect an incoming voltage that is too low for proper regulation and shut off the MOSFET switch. The UVLO circuit can be programmed by a single external resistor. For example, if the resistor is selected to detect a voltage threshold of 4.5 V, the voltage regulator will not be enabled until the input voltage is greater than 4.50 V.

The MIC5236BM-TR also provides a built-in thermal shutdown circuit that will protect the device from overheating. The thermal shutdown circuit will detect any temperature increases, and if the device temperature climbs to an unsafe level, the circuit will turn off the MOSFET switch and shut down the device.
