Working Principle

The MIC5295YD employs a voltage mode architecture operating in a linear (or "series") fashion to regulate the output voltage. In this architecture, a control loop compares the output voltage to a reference voltage and adjusts the output voltage accordingly. The error amplifier, sensed resistor and driver transistor form the heart of the control loop.The input voltage is first divided by the feedback resistor, Rf, and then compared with the internal reference voltage of 1.25V by the error amplifier. If the output voltage is lower than the reference voltage, the error amplifier output goes higher and drives the driver transistor. The driver then turns on the pass transistor which increases the current to the output, thus raising the output voltage. This process continues until the output voltage is equal to the reference voltage, i.e., the output voltage is regulated to the desired value.
