The MIC5841BWM-TR load driver is a high-side power distribution switch from Microchip Technology Semiconductor. Specifically, it is a member of the company’s Peripheral Interface (PI) family of products. It is configured as a single-channel power distribution switch with a nominal operating voltage of 2.5-5.5V and a switching voltage of -1V off to 5.5V on. The switch is capable of sourcing up to 500mA and sinking up to 1.3A.In terms of functionality, the MIC5841BWM-TR has two important features. First, the switch has a zero-voltage dropout (ZVD) function that enables the load to be switched off at any point as long as the load voltage remains within the ZVD threshold. Second, it has an active low open drain control which provides a low current pull-down on the control voltage line. This allows the user to control the load remotely, enabling the user to switch the load off or on intuitively.The primary application fields of MIC5841BWM-TR load drivers are power distribution and load control. The output driver section consists of the pass transistor and additional circuitry for the gate drive of the transistor. The pass transistor is a three-terminal device whose current flow is controlled by the voltage on its gate terminal. When the voltage on the gate terminal is high, the pass transistor is “on”, allowing current to flow from the source to the drain of the device. When the voltage on the gate terminal is low, the transistor is “off”, preventing current flow.In operation, the gate voltage of the pass transistor is driven by the output signal of the IC. Depending on the logic levels present at the programmable input, the IC will output either a low or high voltage signal. When the signal is low, the transistor gate voltage is pulled low, causing the pass transistor to switch off. When the signal is high, the transistor gate voltage is pulled high, causing the pass transistor to switch on.
