Clock/Timing is an important factor to be considered in almost any computer and electronics applications. Many of them require accurate, flexible and reliable timing management. To meet these requirements, Clock/Timing devices such as clock generators, phase-locked loops (PLLs), and frequency synthesizers (FSs) play a vital role. The MK2704SLF is one of these devices. It is a highly integrated, low-power, low-jitter programmable clock generator for advanced timing requirements with excellent performance. It consists of the main block, a PLL, an output buffer stage, crystal oscillator and output divider.
The main block, also known as the clock control block, is responsible for generating the clock outputs and is programmable via I2C communications. It consists of a programmable clock generator plus programmable dividers, PLL and loop filter. The clock generator uses divide-by-8 or divide-by-64 counter to generate the output clock while PLL is used to divide the clock frequency. The output divider takes the output of the PLL and creates the output clocks with different frequencies.
The PLL is an analog control circuit operating on the principle of synchronizing two different system frequencies.
