It provides an extremely versatile method for generating and controlling any number of different analog signals, from video frequencies down to digital data rates. It is most commonly used in mobile switching, digital sound- and image-processing applications, and in broadcasting equipment. The working principle of MM74HC4046N is based on three basic elements: the input signal (an AC or a DC signal, typically a low-frequency sine-wave), the voltage controlled oscillator (VCXO) and the voltage controlled frequency divider (FCXO). The incoming signal is first converted to a voltage-controlled signal by the frequency-to-voltage converter.
