These components are connected together in series to form a closed loop, with an input clock signal at one end and a high-frequency synthesized output signal at the other end.When a clock signal is applied to the Input of the device, it is compared (phase-detected) with the signal from the VCO, and the difference between the signals is used to adjust the frequency of the VCO, thereby generating a synthesized output signal.The VCO, phase detector, and frequency synthesizer of the MM74HC4046SJX can be used to generate and adjust the frequency of an output signal. Additionally, the device has a divide-by-two function, which enables it to generate two outputs simultaneously; a lower-frequency clock signal and a higher-frequency signal that is half the frequency of the input signal.The MM74HC4046SJX also features an adjustable loop band-width, allowing advanced users to fine-tune the responsiveness of the frequency synthesizing circuit.
