The 74HC4060N is an integrated circuit (IC) that supports two important functions that are required for digital electronic circuits; a 14-stage programmable ripple counter and an oscillator. The 74HC4060N is frequently employed in today\'s electronic circuits for applications such as audio amplifiers, clock generator circuits, logic-level converters and frequency dividers/frequency counters. The 74HC4060N works by converting a low frequency signal or pulse into a higher frequency signal or pulse through a divide by-N-frequency divider circuit. The 74HC4060N is designed with a 4-bit binary coded decade counter whereas its low-frequency oscillator circuit is built using a pair of asymmetric NAND gates. The NAND gates act as an oscillator which generates a predetermined range of frequency increments. The design of the binary counter makes it possible to count a maximum of 13 output pulses. The oscillator is activated by connecting an external clock signal which is then used to power up the two built-in NAND gates. This in turn generates the clock pulses which are used to serve as an input for the ripple counter as it cycles from its initial frequency to the subsequent higher frequency.

Operating this IC at temperatures that exceed the rated range can produce incorrect output pulse values and can cause malfunction. Other key features of the 74HC4060N integrated circuit include its low-power consumption, noise immunity and its large logic voltage range for both low-and high-frequency operations.
