Motion Sensors - AccelerometersMMA5212NPKGWR2 is a three-dimensional motion sensing device that helps motion recognition and navigation systems such as human-machine interface (HMI) and systems that require sensing of inclination, vibration and motion. It is a digital output accelerometer that can measure acceleration along all three-axis. Application FieldThe MMA5212NPKGWR2 accelerometer is mainly used in human-machine interface (HMI) for sensing delay, acceleration and tilt or monitoring image stability. This accelerometer is also widely used to detect vibration for applications such as automotive, consumer, sports, and battery-operated electrical devices.Working PrincipleThe working principle of the MMA5212NPKGWR2 accelerometer relies on the piezoelectric effect. When a pressure or force is applied to the piezoelectric material a voltages will be produced. In the case of accelerometers, piezoelectric material is mounted between two parts of the sensor frame and on top of this material is a mass which is free to move when an acceleration force is applied. The mass will move accordingly depending on the acceleration force applied to it and the piezoelectric material will produce a voltage proportional to the displacement of the mass. This voltage is produced at the output of the sensor in the form of analog or digital, depending on the type of accelerometer used.MMA5212NPKGWR2 accelerometer has an analog output. Its output is a voltage that is proportional to the acceleration along the three-axis. The accelerometer has the capability to measure both dynamic and static acceleration of the device.It also has a three-axis sensing element which can detect acceleration along all three-axis and can measure the acceleration along the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis simultaneously. The device has a standard operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and can operate at a maximum voltage of 3.6Volts. It also has an operating voltage range of 1.5V DC to 3.6V DC.The accelerometer is also capable of measuring acceleration in free fall mode. When no acceleration is applied or when the device in the free-fall mode, the output of the accelerometer will be zero and hence, it is very useful for measuring the gravity associated motion.Apart from that the accelerometer also has low power consumption, fast response time, and high noise immunity which makes it ideal for HMI applications as it can detect subtle changes in motion that can be used for real-time feedback. Finally, MMA5212NPKGWR2 accelerometer is also equipped with I2C and SPI digital outputs to communicate with computers.
