Motion sensors are devices used to detect and measure motion. Among various motion sensors, accelerometers are a variety of motion sensor which detects and approximates acceleration. The MMA6825BKWR2 accelerometer is one of them designed for automotive and consumer applications. The following points will cover its application field and working principle.
Application Field
MMA6825BKWR2 is designed to measure acceleration in either the x, y or z directions within a range of ±1.5g - 8g and angular rate in either the x, y or z directions within a range of ± 100°/s - 550°/s. It is ideal for applications such as tilt sensing, airbag deployment, occupant sensing, angular rate measurement, robotics, and navigational systems.
It is a low-power, high-performance motion sensor consisting of a low-g and a high-g accelerometer on a single chip. It is suitable for applications that require high accuracy in tilt and motion sensing. The accelerometer features low-power consumption of 1µA and a flexible, customizable current source (CS) mode that minimizes power consumption for sub-milli-g applications and tilt angle sensing.
The MMA6825BKWR2\'s power saving feature, small package (only 2.6mm x 2.6mm) and low-g ultra-high sensing resolution make it ideal for the portable electronic device applications such as cell phones, game consoles and PDAs. Additionally, other applications include shock detection, automotive functions, and media player acceleration.
Working Principle
MMA6825BKWR2 works on the principle of capacitive sensing. When acceleration along a particular axis is applied, a capacitance in the sensing structure is changed in proportion to the applied force. The voltage signal delivered by the capacitive sensing element is then amplified and measured relative to a power source voltage by a comparator, the output of which is a voltage representing the acceleration.
The sensing element contains two state of the art capacitive sensing elements and two reference capacitors. The sensing elements detect acceleration while the reference capacitors provide a stable reference voltage for comparison. The signal generated by the sensing element is then amplified and digitized by an ASIC, and the digitized signal is then sent to the DSP for further processing.
The ASIC combines both a high frequency and a low frequency response to the signal from the sensing element. The high frequency response is used to measure changes in acceleration below 1 Hz, while the low frequency response is used to measure changes in acceleration above 1 Hz. This allows MMA6825BKWR2 to accurately measure both low frequency and high frequency acceleration.
Conclusion
MMA6825BKWR2 is a high-performance motion sensor designed for automotive and consumer applications. Its wide application field covers from tilt sensing, airbag deployment and angular rate measurement, to robotics and navigational systems in portable electronic devices. It works on the principle of capacitive sensing, exploiting two state of the art capacitive sensing elements that are combined with two reference capacitors to detect and measure acceleration and angular rate.
