In the capacitive balance method, two capacitors are oppositely charged and are connected to the sensing elements. When the accelerometer is moved, the capacitance of the inertial measurement unit (IMU) changes and the voltage across the two capacitors changes sign, indicating acceleration. The design of the capacitor and the way they are connected, determines the particular features of the accelerometer.ApplicationsThe MMA7331LCT is well suited for a variety of applications. Most notably, it is the ideal sensor for pedestrian navigation systems as it is sensitive enough to detect the acceleration of a walking person, yet the device is energy efficient with a power consumption of just 10 mW.
