Motion sensors measure movement and acceleration. Generally, they are electro-mechanical devices that detect a change of parameters such as position, velocity, acceleration, direction, etc. and deliver an analog or digital equivalent of that change. Accelerometers are used in a wide variety of applications include navigation, avionics, medical instruments, robotics, automotive, etc.The MMA7361LCR1 is an integrated single axis low power consumption, low profile MEMS accelerometer manufactured by Freescale Semiconductor Inc. This MEMS accelerometer is designed to measure the forces resulting from acceleration, tilt, shock and vibration in applications such as consumer, industrial, automotive and aerospace.The MMA7361LCR1 is based on the capacitive sensing. The device consists of an array of capacitive sense elements, and its design includes a built-in temperature compensation function. Capacitive sensors operate by measuring the change in capacitance when a mass is added or removed. This change in capacitance is then converted into a voltage or digital output. The operating frequency of the device is 1.8 kHz.The MMA7361LCR1 provides a range of features such as a high linearity, low power consumption, low noise and a wide dynamic range of ±2g, ±6g, ±12g. The device also features an integrated sleep mechanism which allows for low power consumption in sleep mode. It is available in a 3mm x 4mm x 0.9mm package and operates over a temperature range of -40°C to +85°C.The RoHS-compliant device operates using a single 3V power supply and can interface directly with a microcontroller. It also features two output pins - one for x-axis output and one for y-axis output. The output of the device is either in analog or digital signal depending upon the user selection. The device also features an adjustable sensitivity to change the dynamic range of the accelerometer. The MMA7361LCR1 also integrates a self-test mechanism which can be used to ensure that the device is working properly and verify its output. The self-test feature uses an integrated oscillator to detect the movement of the sensing element and thus generate a signal for self-verification. The MMA7361LCR1 has many application fields. It can be used for security monitoring systems, vibration monitoring systems, altimeter modules, airbag monitoring, rollover detection systems, and tilt, acceleration and force measurement. It is also used in automotive applications like seatbelt monitoring and braking systems, industrial applications such as bulldozers, cranes, industrial robots, navigation systems and consumer electronics such as mobile phones, digital cameras, portable gaming consoles and MP3 players.The MMA7361LCR1 is a high performance and cost effective MEMS accelerometer.
