MMBZ5229B Application Field and Working Principle

The MMBZ5229B is a silicon epitaxial basal planar Zener diode, used in a variety of applications. This device classifies as a part of Diodes - Zener - Single family according to its specification data sheet. It is primarily used to protect circuits from excessive voltages, regulate and stabilize DC power supplies, and to construct precision reference sources.

The device consists of an anode and a cathode, and operates at nominal reverse voltage of 18 volts. The device is capable of tolerating reverse voltages in the range from 10 volts to 49 volts. The device can handle powers up to 500 mW at its rated (nominal) reverse voltage. The rated zero current reverse voltage for this silicon Zener diode is 18 volts. It features a superior reverse-recovery time ranging 2~10 μs.

Working Principle

The MMBZ5229B operates on the principle of reverse breakdown or Zener breakdown. When the reverse voltage increases to a certain value, electrons will start to tunnel through the wide bandgap of the semi-conducting material over the junction, thereby allowing current to pass. As a result, the device will start conducting and an increase in voltage will cause a further increase in current. This phenomenon is known as Zener breakdown.

The forward voltage of the device is low and is not dependent on the mounting technology. Moreover, the forward operand current of the device can be controlled precisely without requiring complex adjustment of the current operating point. In addition, the device incorporates a temperature-dependent voltage regulator which allows the voltage to adjust and remain constant over wide temperature ranges.
