Optoisolators, also known as opto-couplers, are electronic circuits consisting of an optically coupled input and output system. The most common type are an input/output system of a transistor and a photovoltaic cell. As the name suggests, they are designed to isolate the input and output circuits both electrically and optically. The MOC212M is an optocoupler designed specifically for use in safety systems. It is a dual-in-line package (DIP) optocoupler with transistor output.

The MOC212M optocoupler has an interesting application field and working principle. At the input side, it has a light-emitting diode (LED). On the output side, it has an NPN (negative-positive-negative) integrated-circuit transistor with open collector. The MOC212M is designed to provide a low-cost electrical isolation solution between two circuits, keeping the maximum voltage at either side of the isolation barrier to a safe level. The optocoupler passes no sharing of ground and offers a wide isolation voltage rated at 1250Vrms (from input to output). In addition, it has very good common-mode rejection characteristics, with a common-mode transient immunity level of 10kV/μs.

The MOC212M optocoupler’s application field and working principle are relatively simple and straight-forward. The LED on the input side is powered by an external voltage source. The LED emits an infrared light when energized, which is detected by the photo-gate on the output side. When light is detected, current is generated in the photodiode and activates the output side transistor. This isolated low-current signal is then passed on to the external circuitry. The output transistor will stay active as long as light is detected and will automatically shut off when the light is not detected. This enables the optocoupler to be used for application controls or circuit protection.

The MOC212M optoisolator is a rugged, low-cost optoisolator that offers reliable electrical isolation between input and output. It is an ideal optoisolator for use in tight spaces and for isolating high-voltage sources from sensitive circuits. It can also be used as an information interface for equipment control, system protection and signal transmission. Its wide operating temperature range and stable performance makes it a great choice for a wide range of applications.
