The MOC216R2M offers effective galvanic isolation between the input and output, supporting a maximum isolation voltage of 5,000 Vrms. Its input consists of a 2.2 kVrms back-to-back thyristor with internally connected diode, which are provided with an LED to trigger the thyristor and diode. The output employs a photovoltaic cell connected to the output transistor. When an input current passes through the LED and is converted into light, the photovoltaic cell will generate load current to excite the transistor into saturation mode.

The MOC216R2M is also capable of long-term signal transmission with extremely low distortion. Its high linearity allows it to offer a high level of accuracy in digital signal transmission, preventing signal loss.
