The MOC3012XSM is a type of optoisolator with a triac or SCR output. The acronym stands for Metal Oxide Semiconductor Opto Coupler with a zero-crossing detector. It should not be confused with an optoisolator which is designed to protect circuits against voltage surges or voltage spikes. It is also referred to as a triac or SCR output optoisolator.

The MOC3012XSM employs an LED as the input interface and the optical connection to a semiconductor photo detector as the output interface. The LED in the MOC3012XSM produces light when an electric current is applied to its LED circuit. This light is transmitted to the photo detector which then triggers the SCR when an appropriate voltage level is detected. The SCR in turn then controls the electric current through the circuit, allowing for good control of the electric current.

The MOC3012XSM optoisolator can be used to control AC current, DC current and power, as well as provide isolated control of electric current over signal lines or connections.
