Optoisolators are a type of component used to provide electrical isolation between input and output circuits. The MOC3022.300 is an optoisolator from Avago\'s Sixpak™ Series product family and is specifically designed for AC switching applications. It employs a GaAs infrared LED optically coupled to a photoacoustic reed (PAR) triac driver. This component affords isolation of up to 3000 V product safety isolation (VDE 0884 and approach distances).

The MOC3022.300 optoisolator is a popular solution for many AC AC/DC switching and interface applications such as power supplies, metering, telecom, and instrumentation. It is a unique version of optoisolator in that it is the only AC output optoisolator in the Sixpak product family. It is a medium-speed optoisolator with a triac output that is perfect for general purpose AC switching applications.

The MOC3022.300\'s basic function is to control the triggering of triacs or solid state relays (SSRs) from a low level source such as a TTL compatible microcontroller. Upon detecting a critical level of current, a controlled avalanche effect occurs that triggers a signal to turn the triac or SSR on and off. This is how the MOC3022.300 optoisolator is able to provide isolated switching control of AC loads such as resistive and incandescent lighting.

The MOC3022.300 has a very unique working principle. Basically, the optoisolator works by using both optical and acoustic coupling to electrically isolate the input from output of the circuit. On the input side, there is a GaAs infrared LED and a photoacrylic reed triac driver. On the output side, there is a co-axial triac which is triggered by an acoustic signal generated by the reed triac driver.

The way the MOC3022.300 optoisolator works is that it takes an electrical signal from the input side and converts it into an optical signal. This optical signal is then sent to the reed triac driver where it is converted into an acoustic signal which then triggers the co-axial triac. The co-axial triac then produces a proportional output current in response to the input signal.

Because of its isolated design, the MOC3022.300 optoisolator is able to operate in gain/appraoch distances up to 3000 V product safety isolation (VDE 0884). It also operates in temperatures from -40°C to +105°C. In terms of performance, it has a maximum forward and reverse blocking voltage rating of 400VAC and an on-state current of 3A. Its off-state leakage current rating is 1mA.
