Introduction

MOC3022SM is a member of non-zero-cross optoisolator family. It is available with a variety of output types, such as triac, SCR output, and has the ability to drive common industrial or home appliance loads such as incandescent and fluorescent lamps, electronic ballasts, triac and AC switches, temperature controllers, motors, pumps, and solenoids. The MOC3022SM is a standard optoisolator integrated circuit which consists of a light activated bidirectional triac and an optically coupled monolithic phototriac.

Application Field

The MOC3022SM is mainly used in areas like office automation, power conditioning, industrial control, household appliance, and automotive control applications and offer an attractive alternative in driving inductive or resistive loads. Its TRIAC termination is capable of driving resistive or inductive loads up to 400V and 10A. It is also an ideal solution for motor control, liquid level control, AC switching, temperature control, and for controlling the solenoid, motor, and heating element.

Working Principle

The MOC3022SM includes a LED optically coupled to a phototriac. The phototriac is configured as a solid-state switch to control the power to the load and is intended for triggering the power conducting devices such as a triac or a SCR. The phototriac and the LED are optically isolated from each other. This ensures complete electrical insulation between the input signal source and the output load, so that power sidetracking effects can be avoided.When input voltage is applied to the LED, light is emitted from the LED, which in turn activates the photo-sensitive part of the optoisolator. The output TRIAC or SCR is then switched on and current flows through the load and the phototriac.When the input voltage is removed, the LED will stop emitting light and the output will switch off. This allows controlled conduction of current and protection from over-voltages and short-circuits on the output.
