The MOC3031TVM is a type of optocoupler comprised of a high dv/dt, zero cross-over, resistive optically isolated triac or thyristor output. It is a type of optoisolator, which is an electrical device that isolates a control circuit from a load circuit using an isolated light beam. The device typically consists of an input device, such as a LED, and an output device, such as a triac, SCR, or moc3031TVM optoisolator. The MOC3031TVM optoisolator also provides LED current limiting, which reduces the number of components required.

The MOC3031TVM is suitable for applications such as commercial and industrial lighting, motor control, fan control, as well as general AC switching. The LED is powered by the input current, which passes through the internal LED current limiting resistor. As the LED illuminates, it turns on the gate of the triac. When the LED is off, the gate releases the triac, thus turning it off.
