Optoisolators are electrical devices that use a sealed photosensitive element to motivate an electrical switch. This electrical switch then performs a variety functions such as switching, controlling, and voltage or current regulation. The MOC3032FM optoisolator is part of the TRIAC, SCR Output family of optoisolators. The MOC3032FM is designed to switch AC loads up to 4A of current. It is rated for 25 mA of gate current at a maximum of 600V of isolation voltage.
The MOC3032FM optoisolator uses an LED input that when energized will turn on the TRIAC switch output. This switching capacitor is utilized as an electrical inverter and opto–coupling mechanism. This means that a signal from the LED is coupled to the TRIAC output and the TRIAC output voltage is fed back into the LED. Thus creating a feedback loop.
The MOC3032FM has a wide variety of applications, such as AC switching, motor controls, general electrical protection, zero voltage switching, level and temperature control, and power factor correction. It is best suited for applications where high speed switching is desired and where low input current is favored. The versatility of the MOC3032FM makes it ideal for a variety of applications.
The working principle behind TRIAC based optoisolators like the MOC3032FM is based on a phenomenon called photoconduction. Photoconduction occurs when photons are absorbed into the optoisolator, and this causes a conductive path to form. This conductive path enables the passage of current from the LED input to the TRIAC output. When the LED is energized, it forwards a signal to the TRIAC output and the TRIAC output voltage is then fed back into the LED.
To prevent uncontrolled current flow between the LED and the TRIAC output, an opto-coupler is used. This opto-coupler acts as a barrier between the input and the output circuits. It allows current to flow between the LED and the TRIAC output, but only when the LED is energized. In addition, the opto-coupler also prevents the TRIAC output voltage from destabilizing the LED.
The MOC3032FM optoisolator is a solid state TRIAC based optoisolator.
