Optoisolators, also referred to as optocouplers, are one of the most popular types of isolation protection components. They are used to provide a high degree of electrical isolation between a control circuit and a powered electric device, while still allowing communication between the two. One type of optoisolator is the MOC3051SR2VM, an optocoupler designed specifically for triac and SCR output applications.

The MOC3051SR2VM is a 6-pin DIP package optocoupler imported by M/A-Com and manufactured in Taiwan by SGS-Thomson. The device consists of a gallium arsenide infrared light-emitting diode (LED) and a zero cross detector using optical coupling to provide the necessary isolation between input and output circuits. The LED has an operating current range of up to 25mA and is activated by a trigger voltage between 7V and 15V. The zero cross detector has an operating current up to 200mA and is activated by an AC signal of up to 380VAC.
