In this article, we will discuss the application field and working principle of the MOC3062SM.

The main application field for the MOC3062SM is AC load control. This usually involves being used as a driver for a triac to switch AC loads, such as lamps, motors, or domestic appliances. As its output is rated for up to 600VAC, it is also suited for higher voltage applications, such as air conditioning systems or larger electrical switches.

The optoisolator and triac driver features a monolithic structure, which provides both the input and output circuits, coupled by an optically isolated interface. This is where the optoisolator element comes in – a Gallium arsenide infra-red LED is used to modulate the light between the two sides of the optoisolator, providing the necessary electrical isolation. The MOC3062SM is also designed to ensure an accurate output-on time to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the triggering of the triac.

In terms of the MOC3062SM’s working principle, when a negative-going input voltage is applied, the LED within the optoisolator begins to emit light, which is then sensed by a phototransistor. This triggers the output which switches on the triac, allowing the current to flow across the load. The total holding current of the output is limited by a resistor (between pins 1 and 3) and by the optoisolator leakage current (between pins 2 and 3).

The MOC3062SM also features a zero-cross detection circuit, which can be used to detect when the AC supply voltage reaches its 0V crossing point – this can be used to ensure that small loads are deactivated when no current is expected to be flowing. When the input voltage is returned to its positive state, the optoisolator turns off, the output is switched off and the triac is deactivated. Thus, the MOC3062SM can be used for easy AC load control in a wide range of applications.
