Optoisolators are devices that transmit electrical signals between two circuits while electrically isolating them to prevent sharing of ground references. MOC3083X, one type of optoisolator, is designed to electrically isolate AC loads from control circuits. It can be used to switch high voltages with low voltage control signals, without direct connection between the high and low voltage sides.

MOC3083X is an optocoupler which combines an LED and a multimode phototriac detector. The LED emits an infrared signal to the detector, which in turn triggers the output. MOC3083X actually consists of two separate parts, an LED and an optical detector.

The MOC3083X package is composed of a 6-pin single-in-line with an isolator system, the pins varying depending on the specific model. This device contains a 6A triac coupled with a silicon detector integrated circuit. It also provides a limited number of protection devices, making it particularly suited for fatigue environments, and its optical coupling insulation makes it effectively immune to electrical noise. The MOC3083X works on 6V or 12V control system and is used to drive lamps, heating elements and other AC loads.
