Working Principles
The multi-phase motor driver of the MP6506GQ-Z follows a Half Module Algorithm (HMA) for the motor driving function, which provides high efficiency for BLDC applications. The HMA provides protection for the driving part by using anti-shoot-through circuit, low side and high side draining delays and soft start controlled current limits to avoid inrush current.
The chip supports PWM and Current Mode control mode, which are determined by the PMI_Ctrl[12] to [15] bits. In the PWM control mode, the motor speed is controlled by an external PWM controller. The motor speed is determined by the PWM frequency; the higher the frequency, the higher the motor speed. In current mode control, the motor speed is determined by the current that drives the motor; the higher the current, the higher the motor speed.
The chip is equipped with a built-in Smart Gate Drive that adjusts the gate resistors according to the PWM input frequency, as well as Auto-Phase adjust for an effortless implementation. The chip also features two Serial Interfaces for accurate current measurements. The chip also supports flexible thermal protection in order to protect the chip from overheating and to provide an optimal performance.
