The MP6515GL-Z from Monolithic Power Systems is a cost-effective and powerful motor driver integrated circuit specifically designed for the high-performance DC motor drive applications. This is a high-efficiency motor driver which is capable of delivering up to 5A of motor drive current. It features a wide range of features, such as integrated FETs, low-voltage DC switching, Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) generator, over-current protection, and a programmable percentage of 100% power limit.

The MP6515GL-Z operates in two modes: low-active and high-active. In low-active mode, the main PWM output pin is at a logic low level and the motor runs at slow speed or remains static. Conversely, in high-active mode, the PWM output is at a logic high level, and the motor runs at high speed. The speed of the motor is proportional to the duty cycle of the PWM signal; the higher the duty cycle, the higher the motor speed. The switching frequency of the PWM/PWM generator on the MP6515GL-Z can be programmed from 10 kHz to 100 kHz. This allows a wide range of motor speeds to be achieved.

The MP6515GL-Z delivers its drive current through two separate channel output pins. The maximum current that can be delivered through each channel depends on the particular device and the programming of the load current components. The drive current sourcing is driven through one channel and the sinking current is driven through the other channel. The maximum current output is about 5 A for each channel, which can be increased with the help of an external power transistor.

The MP6515GL-Z also has integrated protection functions to protect the motor from over-current and over-temperature. The integrated FETs can now act as a current-sensing loop and enable the detection of motor over-current and open-circuit conditions. In the event of an over-current condition, the MP6515GL-Z will automatically reduce the motor current to a safe value, thus protecting the motor from burning out. Another key protection feature added to the MP6515GL-Z is the integrated over-temperature protection. This detects the temperature at the output pins with the help of an external temperature sensor and shuts down the output if the temperature exceeds a programmed value.

The MP6515GL-Z features a number of programmable functions, including the PWM frequency, duty cycle, over-current and over-temperature protection levels, and the 100% power limit. Furthermore, the MP6515GL-Z also has an integrated PWM output pin, two analog inputs for easy programming of the functions, three digital inputs, and one digital output.
