Evaluation Boards are used for developing and testing embedded software in a dynamic environment. The MSC8156EVM is a Evaluation Board designed to take advantage of the best performance, highest signal-processing power and most integrated capabilities available from Texas Instruments\' MSC8156 device family. This board enables development of solutions with low latency and high throughput. The MSC8156EVM features a MSC8156 processor, digital signal processors (DSPs) for intensive signal processing, FPGA circuitry, DDR memory and I/O expansion options.
The MSC8156EVM application field is mainly used for audio, image and video processing, medical imaging, industrial automation, automotive control, smart-grid energy management and machine vision. This board is based on TI\'s 1.5 GHz MSC8156 multiprocessor integrated circuit and features 32K of L1 instruction cache and 32K L1 data cache system memory, 128K of SRAM for both instruction and data, and 1Mbit of external flash memory. The board also provides a maximum of 2MB of DDR3 memory, which is configurable as 64-bit or 16-bit and capable of supporting up to 1333 MHz. In addition, the MSC8156EVM has four independent LVDS channels and can support up to 2048 x 2048 image resolutions.
The MSC8156EVM uses the TI MSC8156 SoC as its powerful engine and is implemented on the ARM Cortex-A15 and ARM Cortex-M4 cores. The ARM Cortex-A15 core provides general purpose computing, transaction processing, and arithmetic calculations while the ARM Cortex-M4 core provides system-level control and real-time responsiveness. The MSC8156 processor includes two additional cores dedicated to digital signal processing for multimedia applications such as video and audio encoding and decoding. These two DSPs also include several peripherals such as SPI, I2C, CAN and UART.
The MSC8156EVM board also includes an FPGA for programmable logic control and features peripherals such as USB, Ethernet, UART, I2C, CAN, and other I/O. It supports up to a total of ten UART devices, four I2C, two CAN, and four SPI devices. It also has four 64-pin expansion headers providing access to the board\'s LVDS channels, up to 8 ADC channels, and up to 17 programmable GPIO. Additionally, there is one on-board Ethernet port to support Internet of Things (IoT) applications. An on-board power supply is used for powering the board and an expansion connector is provided for connecting external hardware.
