Diodes - Bridge Rectifiers are mainly composed of four diodes regularly arraigned in the same package. It is available in the form of a single component or module, comprising of two, four or more diodes and often with heat sink and mounting facilities. The Bridge Rectifier basically consists of two sets of diodes connected in a bridge network, configured in such a way that full wave rectification is achieved, that is it shall convert an alternating current (AC) signal into a direct current (DC) signal.
MSDM100-08 is an adjustable voltage, field effect transistor (FET) Bridge Rectifier which consists of four sets of diodes connected in series in a bridge network. This type of bridge rectifier is designed to accept a range of input voltages from 4 - 40volts, and output DC voltage, of up to 10volts. It is mainly used in AC-DC power supplies, allowing conversion of AC voltage to a high-quality DC bus voltage. One of its primary advantages is that it can be utilized in low-current and low-voltage applications.
The working principle of the MSDM100-08 Bridge Rectifier is relatively simple. Firstly, AC power is applied to two of the Bridge Rectifier diodes, while the other two are left in a “floating” state. Internal circuitry within the Rectifier then processes the alternating voltage or current through a mathematical process known as “rectification”, resulting in DC voltage or current. This means that the MSDM100-08 Bridge Rectifier, can essentially convert a AC power supply into a DC power supply.
For example, when a 7VAC input power supply is applied to a MSDM100-08 Bridge Rectifier, the output is a 9.3VDC supply. At 9.3VDC, the output frequency will be locked in place, thereby providing a consistent and stable DC voltage. However, by adjusting the FET in the middle, the output of the rectifier can be varied - either between increasing or decreasing the output voltage.
The bridge rectifier itself is capable of withstanding and efficiently directing much higher currents than other rectifier types, so it can be used in applications where the power demands are considerably higher than what is desirable in other rectifier types. This level of efficiency significantly reduces the electrical losses occurring in the rectifier, which makes it optimal for use in AC-DC power supplies, converters and high-powered applications which require a DC output.
As Bridge Rectifiers are commonly composed of multiple silicon diodes connected in series, they generally have very low failure rates and can be used in harsh or hostile environments. Furthermore, the entire construction is solid-state and as such, it offers very high efficiency, noise immunity and excellent temperature stability. This makes it ideal for a variety of electrical and electronic applications, where reliability is highly valued.
