MSMCG15CAE3 TVS - Diodes: Application Field and Working Principle

TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors) diodes are an important component of electronic circuits used to safeguard system components and other sensitive devices from electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical overstress (EOS) and other hazardous voltages. The MSMCG15CAE3 is a TVS - diode device built by ON Semiconductor, intended for automotive AC power lines, powerbus bars, and high-voltage power cables. This paper will discuss the application field and working principle of the MSMCG15CAE3 TVS - Diode.The MSMCG15CAE3 TVS –Diode is designed to provide ESD and EOS protection on high-voltage automotive AC power lines. It can provide ESD protection in excess of IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 (>16KV contact, >8KV air), and rated for an active clamping voltage of 15V. The device is built using a N-channel silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET and a LT01920 avalanche diode for overvoltage protection in combination with a low-capacitance X-cap ceramic capacitor. The structure of the device incorporates a reinforced guard ring on the drain side of the SiC MOSFET, allowing it to support voltages up to 500V with both positive and negative polarity.The working principle of the MSMCG15CAE3 TVS – Diode is based on two components: the SiC MOSFET and the avalanche diode. A voltage is applied to the gate of the SiC MOSFET, and the current flows through the body region of the device. When the voltage is increased, the MOSFET begins to conduct more current, and this increases the drain-source voltage, creating an avalanche effect in which electrons in the body region are accelerated by a high electric field, creating more charge carriers and current in the device. The avalanche diode sets a safe clamping voltage for the device so that it does not exceed 15V.When a voltage surge or transient voltage event occurs on the line, the TVS - Diode device is designed to clamp the voltage to a level below the damage threshold of the load. The design also provides reverse polarity protection, which prevents the device from reacting to voltage transients when applied in opposite polarity. The MSMCG15CAE3 TVS – Diode is available in packages with different package bodies and pins. It is rated for power dissipation of 1200W (10/1000 μs, t ≤ 1s), peak power dissipation of 200W (10/1000 μs, t ≤ 1s) and junction-to-case thermal resistance of 4.2°C/W. Additionally, it has an IEC 60721-3-3 class 3M5 rating for non-conductive dust protection.
