MSQ6910C is a LED Character and Numeric display module developed by NXP. It operates as a parallel display for embedded systems. This module is designed for automotive dashboard applications that require small display information.The main application area of the MSQ6910C is the instrumentation of vehicles like cars, buses, trucks and agricultural machines. The device is used to provide illuminated displays on vehicle dashboards, such as speedometers, odometers, service indicators and rotation counters. The module enables a simple, reliable and cost-effective replacement for current LED based displays.The MSQ6910C is a 5.6 mm x 7.8 mm LED character and numeric display module with 16-pixel characters. It is available in two versions, one with standard segmented font and one with segmented font orientated to read brightness. Both are suited for in-vehicle display applications.The MSQ6910C consists of four main elements: a power driver chip with dimming control, indicator LEDs, a data latch and a microcontroller with SPI or I2C interface. The power driver includes two high efficiency power switches and two PWM dimmers, which enables the user to adjust the display brightness in the range of 1.6 percent to 99.6 percent. It also provides protection against inrush current and 200µs pulse width modulation for maximum current protection.The LEDs provide the light for the display. The device contains 16 three-color red, green and yellow LEDs arranged in 8 columns and 8 rows. The microcontroller with SPI or I2C interface controls the data latch. The data latch stores the data for the display and properly controls the power driver for desired brightness.The microcontroller can be programmed with dedicated software for any desired display function. The available functions include digital readouts from sensors (such as speedometers), frequency counters, numeric and alphanumeric displays. The USB interface allows for easy integration and data exchange with computer or other control systems.To use the MSQ6910C as an illuminated display, the SPI or I2C interface is connected to a microcontroller, the microcontroller is programmed with the dedicated software, and the power driver and data latch are properly set up.
