The Otto cycle starts with the intake stroke, where the air-fuel mixture is introduced into the engine. Then, the piston descends, compressing the mixture and increasing its pressure and temperature. A spark plug ignites the compressed fuel-air mixture, releasing energy and pushing the piston downwards, which is the power stroke. After the power stroke, the pressure generated forces the exhaust out of the cylinder, and then the piston is forced back up to the top of the cylinder.
