Working Principle

The working of a single zener diode is based on the principle of a pn junction. In this condition, if the applied voltage increases further, the current flowing through the zener will increase linearly. This is known as the zener knee, and it is one of the main characteristics of the zener diode. At higher voltages, the current will remain constant, and this is known as the zener plateau region. The voltage at which the diode enters the zener plateau region is known as the zener breakdown voltage, and this is the voltage at which the device will become operational.
