Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) are a class of self-contained surge suppressing devices that provide protection against transient overvoltages. The MX5KP16CAE3 is a TVS designed for Automotive applications and is designed to protect both communication and power supply circuits from damage caused by transients generated either internally or by the external environment. When working as a power supply protector, it dissipates in excess of 16V per line with higher peak pulse current ratings and lower clamping voltages. As a communication protector, it effectively blocks transients of up to 15V and absorbs ESD, ELC, EFT, or other transients up to 25V per channel.

The MX5KP16CAE3 is constructed using two Schottky diodes connected back-to-back to form a single device. The diodes are connected in anti-parallel fashion with one positive and one negative diode. This configuration clamps the transient voltage to a safe level. This single device is connected in series with the protected line so that any transient present in the line is applied in opposite directions to the two back to back diodes. This causes the transient voltage to be clamped by the diode’s voltage drop at a maximum of 16V. The MX5KP16CAE3 is designed to provide high speed response to transient overvoltages and is ideal for application circuits such as Automotive Electronic Control Units (ECU), Sensors, Power Distribution Networks, On-Board Diagnostics Systems, Anti-Theft Systems, and other Automotive applications that require high surge-energy protection.

The operation of the MX5KP16CAE3 is relatively simple. When the desired overvoltage is greater than the breakdown voltage of the device, the voltage across the device increases rapidly. This causes the device to reach its peak current and start conducting current. The current then decreases exponentially as the device voltage drops. The diode recovers to its off-state when the voltage drops below the breakdown level. Consequently, the device can sustain and suppress numerous surges without exhibiting any performance degradation.

The device is also capable of handling large pulses over a wide temperature range (-40°C to +105°C). It also has a protected voltage clamping (Vc) of 30V and a low capacitance of 2pF. It is also very pressure resistant and can withstand up to 25 kV of EFT. The device is available in a SOT-123 package and complies with the AEC-Q101 standard.
