TVS – Diodes: MXL1.5KE12A Application Field and Working Principle

Transient voltage suppression (TVS) devices are a special type of diode designed to protect electronics circuitry in conditions of high current and voltage spikes. This diode features a fast response time of less than one nanosecond and a small package associated with a very low capacitance for minimal effect on signal integrity.The working principle of the MXL1.5KE12A can be easily explained. During normal operations, the diode is essentially an open circuit, allowing current to pass freely in either direction, allowing signals to travel on the circuit. If there is a surge, the diode rapidly begins to conduct, diverting the current and voltage away from the protected circuit and to the ground. This “clamping” action acts to instantly reduce the voltage to an acceptable level. The device is then able to return to its open state where it functions like an isolator, effectively disconnecting the signal line from any further surges.Because of its low capacitance, the device also offers excellent signal integrity. The low capacitance (maximum 7.5pF for a 12V device) means it has virtually no effect on signal amplitude or propagation time. The device also has superior ESD immunity and is compliant with IEC 61000-4-2 (ESD) level 2 and level 3 requirements.The MXL1.5KE12A is suitable for the protection of a wide variety of telecom, datacom, and consumer electronics applications, such as modems, cellular phones, GPS receivers, and HDDs. The device can be used in combination with System Management Bus (SMBus) devices and power modules that require ultra-low capacitance protection.
