The MXL15KP64CA, a bi-directional transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode, is a cutting-edge semiconductor technology developed to extinguish destructive high voltage transient surges that threaten many of our electrical systems. At-risk components that this diode protects includes personal computers, controllers, USBs, and circuit boards. Working on both AC and DC power sources, the MXL15KP64CA can be used on sensitive electronic devices that require protection from voltage overshoot or ESD. This diode operates similarly to the Zener diode, in that it limits the flow of electricity using a breakdown voltage. Unlike a Zener diode however, the MXL15KP64CA can block both incoming and outgoing currents, meaning that power and load connectivity is no longer an issue. The MXL15KP64CA provides a broad spectrum of protection for sensitive and mission-critical components due to its superior breakdown voltage and fast response time. Its Maximum Standoff Voltage (the amount of voltage the diode can withstand before breaking down) is 22V per unidirectional (15V bi-directional); Maximum Clamping Voltage (the amount of voltage that the diode will clamp onto and suppress above this value) is 37V (15V bi-directional); Peak Pulse Current (the amount of energy a diode can absorb) is 64A (32A bi-directional). These features combine to ensure effective protection from powerful transients and all forms of electrostatic discharge (ESD) as defined by international standards. The fast response of the MXL15KP64CA diode is critical in safeguarding valuable components from damage due to sudden surges. With a typical Response Time of 1 nsec, the diode can divert transients before they damage valuable system components. To further reduce circuit damage, the diode may also be used in combination with other surge protection measures such as spike suppressors. It is important to note that the diode does not provide continuous protection against ESD, as there is a limit to how long the diode can absorb a surge before burning out. If a system is exposed to high frequency ESD, it is recommended to use a series combination of multiple diodes for robust protection.
