Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diodes are used to protect electronics from voltage spikes in applications such as power supplies, oscillators, medical equipment, and automobiles. The MXLCE60AE3 is a specialised TVS diode designed to protect against transient surges even in the most extreme conditions.

At the heart of the TVS design is a semiconductor diode which can be either Silicon or Zener. Silicon diodes are more resistant to current, but less resistant to voltage, while Zener diodes are more resistant to voltage and less resistant to current. The MXLCE60AE3 can clamp a transient voltage within a range of 20V to 1000V, and is optimised to absorb up to 90A of energy during surge events with a peak pulse current of 3 × 10⁹A. The device has a very low response time and can clamp off a transient surge within 100ns. This makes it ideal for high frequency applications or where critical components require fast protection from spikes.

The device comes in a dual-side cooled and high-power robust mechanical design, which offers even better protection against thermal shocks and overvoltage conditions.
