Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) diodes are semiconductor components that are designed to protect electrical devices from surges in voltage that can occur due to unexpected power fluctuations or other environmental sources. The MXLCE70A is a unidirectional TVS diode that is part of the “DirectBond” series developed by Littelfuse. This diode is specifically designed for protection against transients, ESD, EMI and other overvoltage-related threats in telecom, industrial, automotive and other applications.

MXLCE70A is a uni-directional transient suppression diode designed specifically for protection against high-energy transients such as ESD (electrostatic discharge), power surges, EMI/RFI (electromagnetic interference/radio frequency interference) and other overvoltage-related threats. It is available with either single or dual series diodes and is rated at 10kV/21A peak pulse current. MXLCE70A uses the DirectBond technology, which is a patented process developed by Littelfuse. This technology provides protection from extreme overvoltage events by combining the low capacitance of a standard GPP diode with the higher peak current capability of a glass passivated diode. The DirectBond technology also decreases the size of the die, resulting in improved thermal performance and a lower cost-per-unit. The MXLCE70A also provides superior protection from reverse bias events such as lightning strikes, electrostatic discharge and high reverse transients.

The working principle of the MXLCE70A can be divided into two stages. Firstly, when an overvoltage transient event occurs, the diode is triggered and conducts a current through the protection circuit. This current is then diverted away from the protected device. Secondly, after the transient event has occurred, the diode is reset and stops the conducting current. This allows the device to return to its normal operation.
