TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes are used to protect electronic circuits from damage due to overvoltage transients, as well as electrical noise. The MXLCE8.5A is a TVS diode that is specifically designed to protect sensitive electro-optic devices such as laser diodes, laser fibers, and other integrated MEMS and electro-optic assemblies from high-energy transients directly or indirect coupling. It is ideal for use in laser diodes, laser fibers, and electronic circuits with high speed and narrow tail pulses.

The MXLCE8.5A is designed around a three terminal zener diode which has avalanche capability owing to diffusion. The typical single pulse power ratings for the 8.5A peak pulse current is 15 kV, 1 kA, and 0.75 μJ. This TPS diode has a response time of 1 nanosecond. These power ratings can be attained only if the external impedance is matched appropriately. The external impedance matching is typically achieved by using a parallel combination of capacitors and resistors as a transient suppression configuration.

The working principle of the MXLCE8.5A is that if voltage transient or spike occurs, then the diode gets forward biased and it breaks down. This causes the diode to pass current in an effort to clamp the voltage transient to a safe level and protect the device or circuit from permanent damage or destruction due to the surge. The zener diode will remain in this forward biased state as long as the energy applied is greater than its rating. If the energy approaches a level within the diode\'s rating, then the diode will move to its reverse bias state and break down. As the diode is designed to again respond to voltage transients, it will now release the energy stored and transmit it safely.

The MXLCE8.5A is mainly used for transient voltage overshoot protection in electronic circuits. It is widely used in voltage protection circuits, in opto-electronic devices such as laser diodes, laser fibers, optical switching, and other integrated MEMS and electro-optic assemblies. It is also used in integrated circuits and dedicated transient protection ICs, where it is an integral part of the circuit. In addition, it can be used to protect data buses and power supplies from dangerous transients.

The MXLCE8.5A is a superior transient voltage suppressor for protecting sensitive components from voltage transients. It provides fast response and high peak power ratings, and can be used to protect both analog and digital circuits.
