MXLSMBG160CA is a multilayer silicon avalanche breakdown diodes (TVS-Diodes) designed to protect sensitive electronics’ components from voltage surges caused by ESD (electrostatic discharge) and other wiring or wiring related transients.This diode features the fast, low-capacitance ESD protection in a miniature flat, low profile package and a low-resistance path for selected ESD pulses. The diode is perfect for protecting low current circuit, such as telecommunication, automotive and portable devices. It features highest reliability, robustness, integration and efficiency.Application fields of MXLSMBG160CA diodes include digital and analog signals, LAN Ethernet, USB, I2C buses, RS232 and RS485 transmission lines. The diode is also suitable for point-of-sale systems, consumer electronic products, mobile phones, home automation systems, portable medical devices, remote gateways and other similar applications.In terms of working principle, MXLSMBG160CA is designed to clamp high voltage transients on the protected line. The avalanche breakdown process dissipates the transient as heat while at the same time limiting the current peak on the protected line. The diode instantly responds to excessive voltage transients on the line, thereby clamping the voltage and protecting the device on the protected line from excessive voltage.To ensure optimal performance of the diode, it should be mounted on a proper test board with at least 0.8mm thickness of copper plate. The test board should also be equipped with proper grounding and reference planes that will help reduce the voltage across the diode. Proper orientation of the diode also plays an important role in optimizing its performance.In summary, MXLSMBG160CA diodes are ideal for protecting low current circuits such as digital and analog signals, LAN Ethernet, USB, I2C buses, RS232 and RS485 transmission lines.
