TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors) diodes are semiconductor devices with special functions for transient overvoltage protection. Transient voltage suppressors are reverse-biased (anti-parallel) diodes which are designed to quickly conduct relatively large current when exposed to high voltage transients produced by electrostatic discharge (ESD), lightning and inductive load switching.

The MXLSMBJ110A is a unidirectional Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diode designed to protect sensitive components from damage or latch-up due to over-voltage transients caused by inductive load switching, lighting, or other electrical fast transients.

This device is designed to protect against voltage transients exceeding 70 V. Working Principle

The MXLSMBJ110A device is designed to protect sensitive components from voltage transients with an avalanche breakdown voltage of 70V. It operates in a three step process, beginning with the absorption of the voltage spike, when a high transient voltage is applied, the TVS diode begins to conduct current. In the second step a reverse biased diode conducts current through a low impedance path and absorbs the surge energy. Next, the energy is dissipated as heat and the device returns to its non-conducting state.

TVS diodes are designed to protect sensitive components from the destructive effects of ESD and high voltage transients. These transients can occur when inductive loads such as motors, solenoids, lamps, and relays are switched on or off, or when an electrostatic charge is suddenly applied.
