NB2304AI1HD is a clock generator and frequency synthesizer device from National Instruments. The device is designed to generate accurate time reference signals for high-speed applications such as clock/data restoration, jitter attenuation, system synchronization, phase-locked loops, and timebase reference.The NB2304AI1HD application field makes it especially suitable for high-speed communications and data processing applications, such as 40/100G ethernet, Fibre Channel, and InfiniBand, as well as for applications that require system synchronization or jitter attenuation such as test and measurement equipment, computing systems, consumer electronics, servers, routers, and storage systems.The NB2304AI1HD’s main features include a choice of reference clock frequency, a four-phase output clock signal, and variable low-jitter outputs. It also features very low jitter performance of 45ps RMS, accurate cycle-to-cycle repeatability, low jitter ripple of +/- 0.5ps, and an integrated PLL synthesizer.Working PrincipleThe NB2304AI1HD works on the principle of a PLL, which is composed of a Phase/Frequency Detector (PFD), Voltage Control Oscillator (VCO), and loop filter.At the heart of the NB2304AI1HD is the digitally programmable PFD. The PFD is responsible for detecting the phase difference between the incoming reference clock signal and the VCO signal, and then adjusting the frequency of the VCO signal to match the reference signal. The output of the PFD is the control signal for the VCO, which forms the basis of the synthesized clock signal.The output of the VCO is then passed through the loop filter, and this signal is used to drive the four output clocks. These outputs are designed to have very low jitter, as the loop filter reduces the amount of jitter present in the signal. The loop filter also increases the accuracy of the signal, as it ensures that the reference frequency is maintained over changes in temperature, supply voltage, and loading conditions.The NB2304AI1HD also includes a bandgap reference, which allows for very accurate frequency and phase control.
