NCP1077 is a 3-Terminal Step-down Fixed-Frequency Switching Regulator and boasts several features making it ideal for a broad range of applications. NCP1077 is a high efficiency, constantfrequency, current mode PWM controller with a wide 4V to 22V input voltage range. Itfeatures a wide range of operating frequency, adjustable output voltage, constant on-timetopology and an adjustable soft start.
NCP1077STBT3G is a 3A (max) step-down unit regulation voltage converter with an operating frequency of 550 kHz (typ). It provides high efficiency and better EMI performance with low quiescentcurrent and low ripple output voltage over the entire load range. Utilizing fairchild\'sproprietary Constant on-Time architecture allows the NCP1077 to have a very fasttransient response and excellent line/load transient response. The NCP1077 is designedas ideal candidate for applications in the automotive industry, providing space and costsavings benefits.
The NCP1077STBT3G offers an adjustable soft start circuit that can be used to limit inrush current when the converter is powered up. This adjustable soft start circuit is independent of the system voltage, unlike other solutions that rely on a fixed voltage input. The NCP1077STBT3Galso allows selection between active current mode control, burst mode operation andvariable frequency operation, each one providing different benefits in terms of efficiencyand output voltage ripple.
The main application fields of the NCP1077STBT3G are offline Switching Converters thatrequire: high efficiency, low output voltage ripple, low EMI design, low quiescent currentand four to eighteen VDC input voltage range. Some examples of these applicationsinclude: SMPS, Computer adapters, Car Audio amplifiers, Battery-drain preventiondevices, DVD, Digital TV and other appliances.
The NCP1077STBT3G works by using a pulse width modulated signal to convert the DCinput voltage to a regulated DC output voltage. The switching operation is using afixed frequency that is determined by an external resistor to ground. The frequencydetermines how much time the power switch is conducting and accomplishes theconversion of the input voltage to the regulated output. During the on-time (switchingperiod) the inductor stores energy and a current regulation loop maintains the desiredoutput voltage. During the off-time (skipping period) the stored energy flows through adiode and the output capacitor and supplies the output load.
The internal reference voltage of the NCP1077STBT3G is adjustable from 0.6V to 1.5V,which enables the user to adjust and control the output voltage. The output voltage canbe adjusted from 0.6V to 20V with built-in (gate threshold voltage) circuitry. Thisadjustment range is useful for portable and handheld applications that require multipleoutput voltages.
The features of the NCP1077STBT3G make it an ideal candidate for a wide range ofoffline converter applications. The adjustable output voltage enable applications thatrequire a specific output voltage, while the fixed frequency enables efficient operationand low EMI design. Additionally, the very fast transient response, low quiescent currentand high efficiency make the NCP1077 an excellent solution in a large variety ofapplications.
