NCP1423DMR2 application field and working principle

The NCP1423DMR2 is a high-performance, monolithic, DC-DC switching regulator in the PMIC - Voltage Regulators - DC DC Switching Regulators category. This switching regulator is intended as a direct internal substitute for 5 V/12 V linear supplies. It features high frequency operation, low power dissipation, and excellent load and line regulation.The NCP1423DMR2 includes an on-board Voltage Regulated Switch (VRS) to control the lower voltage side of the DC-DC converter. The VRS is driven by a simple on/off control input that provides very low voltage ripple to the output voltage and reduces external part counts. The output voltage is set by an external resistor divider.The switching frequency of the NCP1423DMR2 is in the range of 40 kHz to 500 kHz, and is adjustable by selecting the external frequency-setting resistor connected to the FREQ pin. It also provides an excellent transient response to changes in the load current and line voltage.The NCP1423DMR2 switching regulator package is available an 8-lead plastic TO-220, 8-lead plastic Cygent molded DIP, and 8-lead SOIC package. It is rated as an environmentally friendly device that adheres to RoHS standards.In terms of applications, the NCP1423DMR2 is primarily used to power processor cores, power management ICs, and other components with low on-board voltage requirements. It is also well-suited for the generation of high-current outputs, especially in high-temperature designs and 12 V automotive applications. Other applications include AC adapters and portable electronic equipment.Now let’s look at the working principle of the NCP1423DMR2. As aforementioned, the NCP1423DMR2 is a high-performance DC-DC switching regulator. Its working principle is based on a mechanism known as “Pulse Width Modulation” (PWM). The output voltage is regulated by controlling the amount of time, or “duty cycle”, that the upper and lower switches are closed. During the OFF-time, the output voltage slowly rises to the set-point voltage and then the cycle starts again.The NCP1423DMR2 uses a Totem-Pole Gate Driver to provide a higher switching speed, improving efficiency and reducing EMI. This feature also allows the transient response of the NCP1423DMR2 to be very fast, providing high output current while maintaining low output voltage ripple.The NCP1423DMR2 also integrates additional features such as an over-voltage protection (OVP) circuit. The OVP circuit helps to prevent the output voltage from exceeding a predetermined maximum level due to an excessive load or adverse temperature conditions. Other features include a soft-start function that minimizes both inrush current when the power is turned ON and output voltage overshoot, and an output disconnect mode which reduces power consumption in the off-mode.In summary, the NCP1423DMR2 is a high performance, monolithic DC-DC switching regulator in the PMIC - Voltage Regulators - DC DC Switching Regulators category, designed for low power designs and 12V automotive applications.
