The NCP1606BPG Power Factor Correction (PFC) is an important component for many consumer and industrial applications such as LED/LCD display systems, medical equipment, home appliances, and light tracks. It essentially provides a clean, stable DC voltage from alternating voltage coming from the mains. The NCP1606BPG utilizes two different PFC topologies, Flyback and Boost; depending on the design parameters and application requirements, one or the other may be the more appropriate choice.

The NCP1606BPG control scheme is a fixed frequency, PFC boost converter with automatic parameter setting mode and current-mode control. It is an integrated PFC controller with an integrated fixed 400kHz optimized MOSFET gate driver to provide isolated digital dimming with enhanced robustness and high-precision power regulation. This PFC controller uses an external low-cost PNP transistor to replace the internal power MOSFET and has an adjustable loop current level for output power regulation instead of traditional current sensing configuration.

In an active power factor correction (APFC) regulator, the NCP1606BPG controller operates with a constant frequency mode, energizing the inductor during the on-time of the active switch and storing energy in the inductor during the off-time.

The purpose of the NCP1606BPG controller is to provide the target power factor, highest efficiency, and optimal stability. The power factor can be given as a filter capacitor connected in parallel to the incoming line, which compensates the reactive current generated in the inductor, thus resulting in a power factor near unity.

To ensure the highest efficiency, the PFC boost circuit is controlled on a constant frequency mode, which allows the switching losses to be reduced nearly to a minimum. The NCP1606BPG controller uses an optimized fixed-frequency control concept to ensure optimal stability and an advanced digital dimming algorithm to minimize the input current total harmonic distortion (THD) to less than 3%.
