PMIC, or power management integrated circuits, are semiconductor devices that manage the power delivery to electronic systems, rebalancing the loads and consolidating multiple regulator functions and power supply control into a single component. Supervisors are a subset of PMICs which provide a “watchdog” for overvoltage and undervoltage trip points (and associated reset output), thus providing a failsafe for production and operation. Working Principle
The NCP301LSN34T1G is an open drain reset generator that provides a reset output that is active low and will remain active low until the voltage rises above the predefined trip point. An internal battery backup switch allows the voltage sense pin to be connected to a stable reference voltage while the power is off.
The reset output is generated using an internal comparator with an ultra low supply current that is written to a reset flip-flop. The reset flip-flop will remain set (reset output active low) until the voltage at the voltage sense pin rises above the predefined trip point. If the voltage falls below the trip point again, the reset output will return to the active low state.
The NCP301LSN34T1G also offers manual reset functionality. When the manual reset pin is taken to a high logic level, the reset output will be reset and the device will continue to monitor the voltage levels as normal. Once the manual reset pin is returned to a low logic state, the monitored voltage will be checked and the reset will be driven low indicating a reset condition if the supply voltage is below the predefined trip point.
The NCP301LSN34T1G also offers a VDD monitoring pin. When power is applied to the device, the VDD monitoring pin allows for monitoring of the VDD voltage level and only once the voltage is within the specified acceptable levels is the reset pin released. This prevents any unwanted system behavior resulting from incorrect power being applied to the device.
