NCV866710D150R2G Application Field and Working Principle
NCV866710D150R2G is a linear high-voltage regulator designed for various power management applications. It is a low dropout and high-current precision voltage regulator with a fixed 3A output and a 0.3V dropout voltage. It is able to operate from 5V to 36V and is offered in standard SOIC-8 and DMPAK hermetic packages. The fixed voltage can be selected in five ranges and is factory-set at 2.5V, 3.3V, 4.5V, 5V, 6V and adjustable input voltage is between 4.5V and 36V. Its output voltage and minimum drop-out voltage remain stable over full rated current, temperature and line voltage changes.

Working Principle
A linear voltage regulator uses a controlled current source to create a negative feedback loop for voltage regulation. The regulator is designed with a built in reference voltage and a differential amplifier. The negative feedback loop operates as follows: the reference voltage is applied to a non-inverting input of the differential amplifier, the sense voltage is applied to the inverting input and the output of the differential amplifier drives a transistor. The differential amplifier amplifies the difference between the reference voltage and the sense voltage and drives the output transistor which controls the current flowing through the regulator. When the sense voltage is lower than the reference voltage the output transistor is driven to reduce the current and the input voltage is allowed to increase until the sense voltage reaches the reference voltage. Conversely when the sense voltage is higher than the reference voltage the output transistor is driven to increase the current and the input voltage is allowed to fall until the sense voltage reaches the reference voltage. Therefore, by continually adjusting the output current, a linear regulator will maintain the sense voltage at the same level as the reference voltage.
