NCV8715SQ12T2G Application Field and Working Principle

The NCV8715SQ12T2G is a low dropout (LDO) linear voltage regulator designed for high current voltage regulator applications. The device typically offers output current up to 500 mA and is capable of sourcing and sinking output current. The low dropout voltage, wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 27V, low quiescent current, small-size and low noise make the device suitable for various applications, including personal electronics, instrumentation, automation and machine control applications.

Output Voltage Range

The NCV8715SQ12T2G provides a selectable output voltage range from 0.8V-6.0V. The user can select the output voltage from 0.8V to 6.0V in 0.1V incre-ements. With all voltage modes, the device of-fer precise output voltage within 0.5% accuracy without additional external components.

Working Principle

The NCV8715SQ12T2G is an adjustable linear voltage regulator capable of sourcing and sinking up to 500 mA of current. The device regulates the output voltage by controlling the current in its pass transistor. This is achieved by sensing the voltage drop across the pass transistor and comparing it to a reference voltage. When Vin > Vout, the pass transistor is on and supplies current to the load. When Vin ≤ Vout, the pass transistor is off and the device will no longer supply current to the load.

The voltage reference of the device is programmed by the external resistor network R1 and R2 which are connected between the REF and ADJ pins. The reference voltage is calculated as follows: VREF = 1.00V × (1+R2/R1). The current in the pass transistor is sensed by the current sensing resistor RCS connected between the SNS and GND pins. The current sense resistor RCS is used to provide a path for a current proportional to the output voltage. The quiescent current of the device is set by a resistor between the SNS pin and the VOUT pin.

The device also features internal over current protection, which literally limits the current through the pass transistor of the device. If the output current exceeds the maximum limit, the device enters into current limit, the pass transistor is shut off, the output voltage will droop, and the device will regulate again, once the load current drops below the set limit.

The NCV8715SQ12T2G low dropout regulator is suitable for applications such as automotive, consumer electronics, telecom, and industrial applications.
