Inrush current limiters (ICL) are devices which limit the amount of current that can flow during the power-on startup of a system, thus avoiding damage to components from damaging high starting current. As its name implies, an Inrush Current Limiter requires the input of current in order to operate. The NF10AA0800M is one such Inrush Current Limiter and is designed to protect against inrush currents of up to 8 Amps.
As with most ICLs, the NF10AA0800M functions by restricting the current flow from the start-up source until the inrush current returns to an acceptable level. This is accomplished via a temperature-sensitive element, which is a negative coefficient thermistor embedded inside the ICL. When the component is being powered up, the thermistor is cold and therefore has a very low resistance. This allows the current to flow freely into the component without rising to damaging levels. As the temperature of the thermistor rises, its resistance increases, slowing the rate of current flow and preventing problems.
The NF10AA0800M can be used in a variety of applications, including server applications, data centers, telecommunications and networking equipment, industrial applications, automotive applications, and more. It is designed to be able to handle a wide range of power input from milliwatts to hundreds of watts, and can handle peak currents up to 8 Amps.
