Temperature Sensors - Thermostats - Mechanical

A mechanical thermostat is a temperature sensing and controlling device that is used to automatically maintain a particular temperature typically within a domestic or industrial setting. Commonly the thermostat is connected to a heating system of some kind and operates by opening or closing an electrical switch, a gas valve, or a damper, depending on the type of heating system installed. Such thermostats are often known by the product name OHD1-50M.

Advantages of Mechanical Thermostats

The main advantage of mechanical thermostats such as the OHD1-50M is their reliability. As the mechanism is entirely mechanical, there are no electrical or electronic components to malfunction or degrade with time, meaning that the thermostat can retain its calibration over years of operation. They are also robust to power fluctuations or outages.

Additionally, they are often preferred for commercial and industrial applications due to their simplicity and low cost - compared to fully electronic systems, they can be much cheaper as second hand and vintage ones are readily available.

Application Field

Mechanical thermostats such as the OHD1-50M are commonly used in domestic and commercial heating systems, for example in radiators, fuel-fired heating, air conditioning and humidity control. They are also used in a wide range of other applications such as temperature control of medicines and ovens, and in industrial processes such as smelting and refining.

Working Principle

The OHD1-50M uses a simple differential bimetallic strip or two strips which are joined together to create a thermal switch. This strip is the sensing element which tends to open or close an electrical contact when it heats up or cools down. As the temperature changes, the strips expand or contract in relation to the ambient temperature. As they move, they push against a cam or lever which controls the switch contact for the heating system.

The level of heat is adjusted manually, usually by rotating a dial or via an internal dial wheel, to the desired setting. This is transferred onto the bimetallic strip where different levels of temperature are available for selection, depending on the model. Once the level of heat is set, the device begins to detect changes in the environment. As soon as the temperature reaches the pre-set limit, the device opens or closes the electrical contact, controlling the heating system and enabling it to maintain the desired ambient temperature.
