Optical Sensors traditionally consist of an emitter which directs light onto a target, and a receiver/sensor which detects the amount of light reflected back. Based on this principle, a Photointerrupter, or a Type Slot Logic Output, works with a similar concept, but with the increased capability of being able to detect the presence or absence of an object within a determined range. All this is made possible through the OPB490T11Z.
The OPB490T11Z is an advanced two-channel, low-cost, and low-power, optical proximity switch. The device utilizes a slot-type configuration and is toggleable between a 20- and an 80-millimeter sensing range. It is capable of operating at up to 5 Volts and draws no more than 20mA of current, allowing it to operate within a wide-range of power sources. The device is comprised of: an 8-pin DIP IC package, an emitter, a detector, and a logic output. The emitter projects an infrared beam which is detected by the detector, allowing the OPB490T11Z to detect switches and object positions within a determined range. The logic output utilizes an open-collector output structure whose logic state is determined based on the presence or absence of the object detected. Additionally, the device also features a temperate range of 0°C to +50°C and ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection of up to 2500v.
