Optical Sensors are a form of electronic sensor which convert light signals into electrical signals varying on the intensity of the light signals. The most common application of optical sensors includes obstacle detection in robotics, medical diagnostics, consumer applications and industrial automation. Photointerrupters are a type of optical sensor which allow for the detection of breakage and interruption of a light beam by an object, using an interruptible light source. Slot Type Photointerrupters like the OPB698BZ are designed for applications which require for the detection of clear objects by a light beam interrupting a path. The OPB698BZ is an isolated channel slot type photointerrupter with a logic output. Its purpose is to detect clear objects, which means the detection range is limited to the size of the object. Its design allows for precise and reliable detection even when the object is partially obscured. The OPB698BZ comes with a 0.2 inch narrow slot width, giving it a precise optical beam on the emitting end and a higher detection capability on the receiving end. Its isolation channel design allows for the direct mounting on the board or surface, and it uses a reflective optical system to detect both the inbound and outbound transition of the object in the slot. The OPB698BZ consists of a base and an optical system connected to a semiconductor detector. On one end of the base there is an LED light source and an integral lens, both of which are mounted in a plane. Opposite the LED light source and lens is a photo transistor with an integral photo cell. When no object is present in the slot, the LED emits light which is then picked up by the photocell and sent to the photo transistor. When an object passes through the slot, the light emitted from the LED is intercepted and attenuated, producing a decrease in the signal produced from the photocell and triggering a pulse which is picked up by the photo transistor and sent to the output. The OPB698BZ features a logic output which provides a signal when an object passes through the slot. Its detection capability is sensitive and precise, and its response time is fast. With its narrow slot width and reflective optical design, the OPB698BZ is perfect for detecting clear objects and is capable of detecting objects as small as .005 inches. Its isolation channel design further enhances its detection capabilities, as it allows for direct mounting on a board or surface.
